Two local nursing homes – Claremont in South Melbourne and South Port in Albert Park were established 65 and 45 years ago respectively, and the buildings were largely paid for by donations from the community. They merged in 2010 to form CaSPA Care.

Today, Refundable Accommodation Deposits – formerly ‘bonds’ – may be used for capital works, however a much higher than average percentage of our residents are not required to pay them and government funding is not available for major capital works or for the purchase of equipment.

In the next few years there will be more demand for residential aged care and we are keen to meet that need with our next development. The more we can raise for this purpose, the less we need to borrow and the more we can spend on residents.

We like to give our residents the best and most comfortable environment possible, to be able to take them on outings and to provide them with services that would be impossible without financial support from the community.

Volunteering

The gift of friendship

Our volunteers offer the most precious gifts of all; their time and their generosity of spirit.

Some come to play musical instruments or sing. Others bring their well-behaved dogs – marvelous reminders of the love so many residents had for their own pets. Young mums with their babies and visiting groups of preschool children bring the joy of new life and always smiles all round. Others visit particular residents for a quiet chat, a talk about the old days.  For residents who have no family, a volunteer can be a best friend, shop for that special item or join them for a walk.

We have volunteers who patiently help residents surf the net, who read the news out loud. Artists share their skills and enthusiasm. Some residents will paint for the first time ever. Others work with residents who are keen gardeners but need a little help. And no one is too old for games.

If you have an hour or two spare each week, we can match you with a resident. We promise this will be a friendship to remember.
